That's really not the problem with SKR, SKR's problem is that its runtime is dominated by characters infodumping things on each other, there's an absolutely massive amount of time in the movie of characters just standing around and outlining their life story for Hongo and the viewer's sake. The intro was bad about this, then for Spider-Aug it was actually fun because they were moving all over the place while it was going on; the constantly changing scenery was an obvious nod to old KR, but then the rest of the movie isn't that creative about it and it takes itself much too seriously while simultaneously having no emotional weight whatsoever because you have no reason to care about or be attached to any of the characters beyond nostalgia value. Hayato is basically the only character in the movie to evoke any emotional investment because he's both entertaining and has a character arc in his brief time, meanwhile Hongo is just there getting dragged along for most of the film, and the villain and Ruriko's whole thing is laughable, never mind Anno turning it into a fucking instrumentality plot of all things. I wanted to like it for all the great aesthetics that went into it but the writing being such a massively tiresome element of the movie just made it impossible.

Oh and here's something I forgot to add for you anon
The First was my introduction to KR and I liked that a lot more
Though admittedly I would probably have a lot of gripes with it if I watched it again now, which I've been planning to do since watching SKR
Apologies for this diversion, I'm heading out now so we can all go back to waiting for Bae.
