I like this anon's take on it, but putting that aside I think it's something that stems from mental association. Many people are willing to admit the like the scent given off by the opposite sex after physical activities like sports or working out. That scent of course, comes from sweat, and the most common places attributed to sweat are the forehead, neck, and armpits. But while the forehead and neck are generally visible to some degree, armpits usually being covered by sleeves gives it sort of a "taboo" factor, and it's that combination of being something that's normally supposed to be hidden, the greater than average affinity for sweat, and slightly suggestive appearance that creates the draw
