I think it's helpful to have a philosophical framework for life, that you can keep consistent even if people come and go. It doesn't have to be religion, but it can be. I know stoicism is making a pop comeback. Just like a set of beliefs and practices to give your life a sort of order, no matter what events happen in it. It gives you something to fall back on even if friends leave, and if/when they still never leave, all the better.
