Showing off personalities properly in writing is as difficult as something can be in writing. Much like writing in an ESL manner, the way that character's mind works in fundamentally very different from yours. If you were as funny or as charming or as entertaining and likeable as the chuuba you're writing about, you'd be in a position like theirs. As a writer, you can only hope to mimic a fraction of their power. How do you write that character saying a joke if you're not a funny person? You can't. You'd have to think like they do.

That's why the cream of the crop of fanfic writers are the ones who consume enough material that they can manage to start thinking how the character would act. And there's a world of difference between someone there and someone here.
