Just learn a couple easy recipes and stick to them. Once you get used to the routine you will mess up less. Call me a shill or whatever but internet shaquille has some good videos for very beginner level cooks that are short and to the point. Check him out if you need a more comprehensive guide.

forgot to specify it's freshly grated parm, not the ready shredded stuff.
There are probably other recipes out there that use those bagged parm or even parm powder but that's how I usually make mine.
