I'd start with a general idea and aesthetics for the nation, and then build a foundation around those ideas. I recommend looking at the thread culture for ideas if that is possible.

To me, stories are lore, but they come with the caveat that most of the time stories include unreliable or biased narrators. So, a stories might not give accurate views of events or locations. Just because some shmuck claims to talk to the gods, does not mean that they do.

If we are to become neighbours, we should probably discuss the economical and political relationship of the nations (both modern and historical) at some point, but that not a top priority, unless you really want to go into it soon.
