Yume was monetarily successful, as I understand it. It was legal incompetence that brought it down - the hostess aspect is close enough to cabarets/clubs that you need to have a corresponding legal backing for it. Anykara didn’t bother with that, and management shat its pants and shut down the branch at the first sign of trouble.

I think it’s sad. There’s lots of lonely people who just want Yume provided - talking with women, nothing lewd -,so it’s a very interesting niche to fill.

vtubers are just streamers. Cover created a trend with Hololive by treating their vtubers as idol celebrities which fused the appeal of streaming and idol culture, and opened a new audience to idol culture who were previously only interested in streaming. Vtubing helped bridge the gap because otaku love to connect with anime characters even if they don't understand the culture as opposed to connecting with real women who don't play a character on stream. Yes, vtubers are just professional celebrities that connect with their fanbase via usually doing streaming.
