not a problem. it's 2-4 seconds depending where you live. and it's consistent.

identify the pattern in when your oshi looks at chat. does she do it after dying in her game of choice? have your joke prepared when her hp is falling. does she have a "tell" when she's about to look at chat? for example, her eyes wander a little bit to the left (probably checking stream statistics panel) before they go to her chat on the right. identify this. store it. arm yourself with knowledge. know your oshi's gaze before it visits itself upon you. and when it cometh, have your joke unholstered.

there are also Dark Arts. for example, when you see an annoying VIP type a funny joke (such things happen once upon a moon,) you may use the Gigantic Paragraph Jutsu to scroll it out of chat. he will be embarrassed to repost. this is an unethical jutsu, and many such ones exist.
