I think it would be way weirder if they were actually dating IRL.
Imagine you're in a relationship and execs are asking you to broadcast your gestures of intimacy to thousands of people for entertainment. At least when it's pretend there's a more clear separation of private vs public in your interactions, it's no different from acting.
