There is so much history and design work that goes into appliances that I don't know if anybody fully understands what they own. Part of the issue here is that people have so little knowledge outside of the basics to get them to run, and then they pass on a version that's even more basic than what they know. People then insert super complicated storebought detergents they can't even begin to understand or explain the purpose of, so when you solicit an explanation in order to learn from their experience, you get less than nothing and it's just very discouraging.

methanol is always produced in small amounts by yeast. it's dangerous ONLY because the body doesn't react to remove it like it does with ethanol, but it DOES if you drink it mixed with ethanol to get the process going. all non-distilled drinks have some methanol and it's harmless. distilled liquor isn't any different, but methanol boils at a slightly lower temperature so the first jar typically has it all. drinking just that jar and nothing else is potentially dangerous, or drinking anything labelled "alcohol" from a chemistry lab without knowing what it is. even in a worst case scenario where you drink pure methanol, you can defuse the situation with some actual liquor.
