ASMR isn't for "getting off to." It triggers a very pleasant tingling sensation in the back of the head/neck. It's a holdover from a time when social grooming was a thing. The kind monkeys do where they clean each other. It kept people calm and still so they got cleaned properly. While it is pleasurable, there is unironically nothing sexual about it. The "problem" is that many people just straight up aren't wired to feel ASMR anymore.

The early days of ASMR videos were things like watching someone shine shoes or go to a doctor for a checkup. Basically just personal attention. Then people discovered that certain noises could trigger the response and trigger videos became common. People who cannot feel ASMR would just watch the trigger videos for general relaxation purposes, like people who listen to rain sounds. The girlfriend/whispering roleplay came later as women saw a market for men who wanted relaxation videos. This still works for triggering ASMR for the most part so nobody minded much that they labeled it as such.

Unfortunately, thots eventually found the ASMR scene and mistakenly believed that it was just a bunch of losers who wanted a woman's attention. So they decided to tongue the mic while flaunting their cleavage on stream. Now ASMR is being associated with coomer stuff because a good portion of the population doesn't, and physically cannot, understand what it is actually about. There's nothing inherently *wrong* with the audio porn industry, but I wish they would call it something other than ASMR because it isn't. They only call it that to fly under the radar and avoid stricter censorship.
