taiwan is hardly china either but they have a much more legitimate claim to being a direct continuation of the chinese state. the chinese republic got the emperor to step down and got recognition of the emperor, while he held his power, that they are the new chinese state.
long after puyi abdicated did he endorse communism, and it was only at gunpoint and through re-education camps. hardly legitimate compared to the republican's transfer of power.
in contrast to the republic seeking a transition of china into a new government, the communists wanted to destroy everything and start a new society.
