I was thinking about this prompt (by me) and wondering if instead of a corporate conspiracy it should be a story of some kind of (in a literal sense) magical experience bringing colour back into the lives of black company era Marine and (you). Something like a mix of a Murakami novel and Haruhi with a life-affirming feel.
