Heh, the a was supposed to be this star symbol you used in the rentry's chapter title. I thought that was a nice touch. But yes, environmental hazards are a great way to ramp up tension. Beautiful desolation is also apt, that's a feeling that came to my mind a lot when I went to the Arctic.
