What the mask prevents is your saliva from traveling further away, not the virus alone.
If you touch the mask even just to adjust it, you can get the saliva in your hands and then spread it, so you shouldn't be touching anything, you should be changing mask and washing hands continuously. We all know no one will do that, and this is why it doesn't work. It doesn't make sense in public but it does in a hospital
