This reminds me I was studying her body earlier and noticed something interesting. There's a small gap in her legs between the white and purple segments, indicating that she does indeed have a shell that encompasses her entire body. Her soft squishy bits are probably dark purple in color while the shell is the white that you see. It also looks like there's a bit of empty space between the shell and the internals. You can see it when she moves side to side and this part of her leg darkens like there's shadow being cast on the purple bits.
