I mean, sure, there's no solid rule about it, but it's the common thing to do. Katakana is mostly to write foreign words and highlight native words, which is why I said I've never really seen foreign words in Hiragana. Maybe it's common in certain cases, or it's becoming more common now compared to the past, but it still throws me off.
