Do you think things would be better if social media stuck with the MySpace model of mutual friendships? Back then if someone like a musician wanted to shill their music and increase their friend count, they would have to add you as a friend too and increase your own friend count. Since Twitter came along and introduced their one sided follower model, it’s a lot more beneficial for people who want to be e-celebs to not follow anyone back and keep their follow back ratio low. People even play weird games like mass follow people and then unfollow them to keep their ratio low. I dunno, just feels like the whole system is built on dishonesty and taking advantage of everyone else compared to how it used to be on the MySpace days.
