More accurately it's not something that actual wolves in their natural habitats do (they form nuclear families and most people don't call their dads alphas, hopefully), but it can happen when you put a bunch of unrelated wolves in one place with no escape (captivity). Animals usually act very neurotic when in captivity and forced to interact with others (see the "mouse utopia" experiments or way too many zoos and marine parks) so I guess it makes sense the whole ABO thing is most popular in prison, ex-tumblr fandoms and (lately) the worsening internet at large
