Actually it depends on the context and personal or cultural preference of the person. In many religious contexts it is capitalized when referring to a specific deity such as the Christian, Jewish, or Islamic "God".
However, when "god" is used in a non-religious and more general sense (such as now) not referring to any divine being or deity, it does not need to be capitalized.
