You shouldn't worry that much. Most games you can pick up and play. Doesn't hurt to do a little research before hand though.
Universally and you likely already know this but:
Play games at the correct aspect ratio
No filters like one in picture
Pick emulators based on accuracy.
And like other anon said don't play bad remasters
