Yes but the filler was integral to the plot and could explore concepts in a way that'd make them seem less out of the left field when properly introduced. Imagine the candle would later unmelt itself and that would be a mystery in the plot. Also imagine that the candle melting was not something you expected when you bought it.

Is this analogy too difficult? I'm sticking to it either way.
