You are confusing cause and consequence here.
Mito's early relevancy is exactly because she was getting crazy numbers (20k in an era 3k was reserved for the heaviest hitters) but she had a full gen alongside from the start.

There is a counterfactual past where, for some reason, it was Hajime getting crazy numbers early on and, instead of having an audience of 200 (half of which turns up out of spite and to spit on him continuously for a full hour) he would be the "Nijisanji daisenpai"
