>A good spy thriller
But Anon I'm writing something like that.
What I can recommend you do is to just come up with the plot and characters first. You can leave all the "realistic" shit like knowledge about CQC, history, how a soldier/spy actually operates and other stuff for later. The sole purpose of those things in the story is to just make it feel real/"cool"/grounded. Accoutrements, pretty much. At the end of the day, it's still all about the characters and plot; figure out the foundation and lay down all the realistic spy stuff and shit bit by bit (while making plot and character updates as you go along). At least the thriller will be doable though it'll still be a real pain in the ass.

schizos are great, but fuck me if I have to write a Hannibal Lecter/"functional schizo"-type of character

That's part of the reason why it's so hard to write a time travel story that doesn't suck. You have to stop yourself from doing it or else you instantly render the entire plot meaningless ("Why should I give a shit about this story and the characters if they can just fix shit with little to no consequences?")
