Ironically the Vei letter has a point: the problem is not her having a boyfriend, is her changing the type of streams she usually made.
If you have been a chuuba with a bf from the start, you are consistently delivering the same product with the same quality over time.
If you were doing GFE and then change your content to streaming league with your boyfriend, you will definetively have issues with your pre existent fanbase.
This isn't very different from a variety chuuba getting addicted to genshin/ FFXIV and stream nothing but that for hours. You are "betraying" your core audience by radically alterating your content.

This very simple context is incredibly hard to graps and most vtubers actually fall into this trap in many ways:
1- Seiso chuubas suddenly pandering to coomers
2- Radically changing your model to an objectively worse one
3- "Going pro" disease and streaming nothing but APEX for YEARS.
4- Getting collab fever and suddenly all streams are collabs.

These are in many ways worse for a western vtuber than having a boyfriend yab and more damaging to their numbers in the low run.
In this business there is one rule and one rule only: know who your core audience is. Western entretainment has the tragic tendency of pissing your fanbase in favor of pleasing people who do not watch your content. Large corpos can get away with it but it usually spells death for indies.
Nerds sperging out about boyfriends on stream is not systematically different from sperging out about the Star Wars saga sequels and it is born out of the same feelings of betrayal to the "franchise". Be honest with your audience from the start with the product you want to deliver and you will save many troubles in the long run.
If you plan to radically change your content, reincarnate. This is the one advantage vtubers have over regular streamers: use it.
