I think that's another side of the same coin. Because the internet is now a business space first and a public forum second, there's more of an incentive to capitalize on trends in a shallow way to catch the wave as soon as possible and milk it for engagement before the meme goes stale. Every trending thing needs to be turned into a product and spread as quickly and as far as possible because it's an investment.
