In an effort to avoid writing an entire essay about it, I'll just say that it's a grinding game. You grind more so that you can earn materials to craft tools that let you grind faster. There is no endgame but the movement and combat in the game is literally one of a kind, so people end up dumping thousands of hours into it because no other game can compare
