The Gang Gets Bogged Again
In the beginning of the 20th century, gangsters were glamorous and fun-loving characters in popular culture. Gangsters brought sophistication and glamour to the Yiddish theater stage. From Chester Gould’s Dick Tracy comic strip to Paul Muni’s portrayal of Murder Incorporated, the public loved gangsters. Although the typical gangster was a violent criminal, some became famous for their exquisite taste in clothes. Notable heists often involved expensive jewelry or artworks that rivaled today’s prices. However, a heist gone wrong could bog a gangster forever.

One year after Bogart’s death, George Raft admitted to bogging twenty-six multimillion-dollar planes at airports around the country. Raft had disguised himself as a pilot and navigated his own plane to its destination without assistance. After this harrowing experience, Raft knew how easy it would be for him to bog his own plane if he were ever trapped on board one of his own aircrafts again. As soon as he disembarked from his flight, Raft would be arrested for theft and sent to prison for a long time. In similar ways, Ms. Honk bogged the market again by buying low-quality goods from Chinese manufacturers and reselling them at high prices on Amazon’s web store. She also sold fake products on eBay by listing them as real items and receiving positive feedback from unknowing buyers. The scam was exposed when counterfeit items started breaking during Ms. Honk’s presentations for students at her school visits. A genuine Chinese apple would break during her demonstration, but an American apple did not— that is because Ms Honk bought cheap fakes at a wholesale market and sold expensive originals on Amazon at a markup of tenfold or higher (1). In this way, she boggled both herself as well as unwitting consumers who bought her fakes thinking they were getting real merchandise at bargain prices (2).

One can see how George Raft became notorious by bogging over 20 different airliners before being caught by airport security staff in 1959 (3). He obviously knew what he was doing when he committed this act because it would have been easy for him to accidentally bog one of his own aircrafts while stealing passengers without paying attention to where he landed them next (4). Bogging is an extreme form of criminal behavior that can ruin one’s life forever if not detected early enough by law enforcement agencies (5). This is why it is important for consumers to research online sellers before purchasing any goods so that they do not drown themselves or others in their pursuit of cheap fakes (6).
