>Digimon World (PSX)
An open-world virtual pet RPG. The main gameplay loop is similar to real v-pets, with a roguelite system of inherited stats to ensure your partner's death is not a return to square one.
Mechanics, evolution requirements, and general progression are obscured to a fault and there's no shame in consulting a guide.
>Digimon World 3 (PSX)
A more traditional party-based RPG that retains some v-pet systems like training and a branching evolution tree. You pick a team of three Digimon at the start and do not collect any more. Rather grindy but otherwise good.
Also the OST slaps.
>Digimon World Re:Digitize (+Decode) (PSP/3DS)
A spiritual remake of the original Digimon World with significant QoL updates, more Digimon to raise, and a more-involved story.
The Decode version adds a wealth of extra content.
>Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth (+Hacker's Memory) (PS4/Switch/Steam)
The most-modern Digimon traditional RPG which borrows from the SMT formula. Unlike DMW3 you will be able to collect monsters. The evolution mechanics here are so free that you can theoretically evolve and devolve one Digimon across the entire catalog. CS's English translation is a bit subpar.
>Digimon World Next Order (PS4/Switch/Steam)
The most-recent virtual-pet RPG, has even more QoL compared to Re:Digitize, and a more involved combat system. Compared to Re:Digitize, the wealth of content is more similar to DMW1. Has a middling English translation similar to CS.
>Digimon Survive (PS4/Switch/XBO/Steam)
The newest game in the franchise, a dark visual novel which takes heavy conceptual inspiration from the original Digimon Adventure anime. In addition, there is also a system for strategy-RPG battles. The split is about 70% VN, 30% SRPG.
This is an easy rec for a visual novel fan as its production value is uncommonly high and the story is pretty good.
