Update, MEGA will preview/thumbnail the following formats: JPEG 2000, WebP
JPEG XL, JPEG XR, HEIC, AVIF all failed to preview. I tested AVIF and HEIC multiple times, both lossy and lossless, since they displayed "image icons" in MEGA, but they still didn't display as images. Should also add that I'm using Microsoft Edge on Windows with the appropriate AVIF/HEIC Store "extensions" installed and can view them directly using "Photos", so if it were to work in any browser, it would've worked here.

That leaves only JPEG 2000 and WebP as lossless options, and as options other than JPEG at all really. Lossless JPEG 2000 is completely useless. Lossless WebP would only free up ~5 GB, best case scenario. I used the 12 images in the "34548551" folder as a test.

I then tried it manually with a bit more obsessive cwebp settings using elGoog's command line encoder: cwebp -preset drawing -q 80 -m 6 -mt -af -sharp_yuv -progress -noalpha -alpha_filter none -hint picture
File size was only slightly larger at 509 KB total

one major downside to WebP other than it sucking balls is that MEGA doesn't appear to display a thumbnail until after I've looked at the image using their web interface once
