Given Mori's own words about it, I think your initial impression is more accurate, and overall the lyrics feel more applicable to me as an expression of guilt over everything that went wrong for her (and others, >us, by extension) and an acknowledgment of the anxieties (internal) and adversaries (external) that still haunt her as a result of her choices. But in the end, it's about defeating those things even if they hurt her deeply (possibly irreparably), and the feeling of finality and departure you described is about moving on from the pain of past mistakes, which is also reflected in the story told by the music video and is corroborated by Mori's account of her working with TK on the lyrics.

I looped it for several hours this morning so I feel pretty comfortable with my interpretation.
