Only pure Catholic souls can enter heaven, if you have even a little sin on your soul, like lying, you cannot enter as you are not pure. However if you have earned your entry into heaven but still have that sin on your soul you go to purgatory where you will be cleansed by fire until your soul is purified, then you may enter heaven. This is penance. One way to shorten the time spent in purgatory is for the living to pray for the souls in purgatory. We can pray for them any day but on all souls day (November 2) it is a feast day set aside that we may pray for them. On that day children would go door to door and ask the homeowner if they had dearly departed so that they could pray for their souls. In exchange the homeowner would gift them soul cakes as thanks. This is the Traditional Catholic origin of that tradition and it would eventually secularize into what we now know as trick or treating.
