It doesn't work because the EN Niji males appear on stream so much that their personalities become too displayed to the audience.
There are moments on stream where the guy doesn't act like how the AUDIENCE would, so that ruins the self-insert immersion.
In addition to that, both niji boys and niji girls discuss their off-stream activities like outings, discord calls etc. on stream and make references to them frequently. This also portrays personality, and with the girls actually responding and engaging with these, it tears down the "bland" personality trait that's absolutely required for self-inserts to work. The girls acknowledge them as individuals, hence this audience simply feels cucked by the male on screen instead of the harem fantasy they imagined.

This is why this particular audience is so fixated on homos. They don't interact enough with the girls but are part of the same company - giving them a legitimate connection, but at the same time the audience can mostly ignore their personalities since they don't watch them.
This is also why the Vesper-Kronii crowd thinned out and stopped pushing the two so much after her collabs. Vesper had too many on-stream appearances, and became too "real" for them to self-insert onto.
There's a reason why pandering to this particular crowd is poison, and why the entire homo branch is a severe vulnerability in allowing them an "in".
