If you are either too young to remember or somehow lived under a rock, let me explain. An entire generation in the west, and I guess Japan too, grew up on Harry Potter. It was literally their Lord of the Rings in terms of books, their Dungeons and Dragons. One of the longest-running and most subscribed to podcasts in internet history(MuggleNet) was about Harry Potter, and it's still going to this day with the stance of "we talk about the work, not its creator". So of course a big game about "being in their world" would be huge regardless of controversy.
