Real answer: A jpg is a "lossy" file format that reduces in quality every time you save it. You ever see memes with a bunch of static and shit all over it? That's because it's been saved and shared dozens of times (or ironically emulating that phenomenon). png is a "lossless" file format and thus doesn't have that problem, at the cost of a little more space
