Oh, I love this, it could generate some kind of standing field used to create thrust, would look very ethereal and plasma-like, and then it lights up brightly when the pilot kicks on the afterburner. Might have an angelic vibe.

That's great too! Besides those, that could also be how drones (aka funnels) are carried.
There's more ways to do mecha capes than I thought. I also had the idea that the "cape" could be made out of a cloud of nanomachines, which could have in themselves all sorts of applications.
