Audio engineering was kinda of a secret science back when Nyan started out. There's not a lot of easy to set up "pro/am" mics for home recording at a poverty price point. Maybe, the Shure SM-58, even then you have to do XLR inputs into the PC and there wasn't much for that back then either.
