The writer is the only one self-inserting. The reader is just seeing what the writer is like in some ways, though saying as much here is enough to get you crucified. How do you go about writing a blank character without letting your own opinions and thoughts to influence him? Unless you establish some ground rules such as "my character will never do harm to innocent people, even though I would" then (You) is just a self-insert of the author alone.
