My gym is segregated between the dedicated lifters in the free weights area and the rest of the gym with the machines and cardio options are the average people who were probably also self-conscious about being there at first.
Just understand that people know you're going to the gym to better yourself and that's an admirable thing to do. A fatty hold up a buffet line is perceived different to seeing one sweating their ass off on a treadmill.
