It's not as bad as people say but just not very good.
They had a somewhat similar starting issue as Japan (surrounded by sea, lots of people, not the biggest amount of arable land) but what makes Japanese food such an export and British food... not... is the fact they never made much use of native herbs or fermentation.
Not like they couldn't have known, either. It used to be under Roman rule and the Romans made heavy use of fish sauce.
