Here is something that might be new, might be just "unnoticed" or maybe they just made explicit something that used to be implicit
>Youtube sorts their recommends "by your region" by default
In the Gaming section they made this explicit, Enter https://www.youtube.com/gaming then click the first game, right now, Minecraft with over 100k watching worldwide.

The recommendation list is sorted first by the number of people IN YOUR REGION (whatever that means) and only then, by views.
You can sort by "Worldwide" and it will sort by views but that's not the default behaviour

It is safe to assume they are doing something similar in their general recommendation engine too, except they don't give the option to sort by "Worldwide".
Maybe their concept of "region" is much smaller than countrywide, and people end up getting recommendations because seven people in their city watched something.
But whatever it is, it's dumb as fuck
