1. Homicides by gun in Australia were already trending down before the first and second buyback and the anti-firearms legislation, and this down trend was not accelerated by the buy backs or legislation.
2. Homicide generally was trending down, and this down trend was not accelerated by the firearms legislation or buybacks.
3. Weapons for self defense are illegal.
4. Carrying any potential weapon with the sole intent of self defense is criminalized as a premeditated act.

Given that homicide didn't really change without guns, except that said homicides started to involve guns less, it's not hard to believe that you're just letting any person who is okay with being a criminal and murderer with access to a knife (all of them) do whatever they want, when guns can provide a reasonable defenders advantage for lawful people against unstable and more likely criminal people, even when said latter group could itself be armed SINCE REMEMBER: An aggressor (likely) never defends.
