Other Sanallite here, I was thinking something more along the lines of this. It would be a pretty flat shape when in flight, and once it landed, the top would extend in different directions, with the end shape being something akin to a star, with 5 or 5 extended parts. The ship itself would be, what did we say, 30-40m tall? unfolding would just give us a lot more horizontal space.

I was also thinking of expanding the pre-crash lore by making us actually a part of a fleet, which you know, usually includes more ships than one. A design like this would also tie into that. Basically, by having a roughly honeycomb shape, multiple ships can connect to one another, and when a target planet/solar system is reached, ships that were designated for it detach and the rest of the fleet continues to the next target. The end of the journey would be only for the flagship, in this case us, to reach, and the original crew were in some cases not expected to return, ever. The entire round trip could take anywhere from 50-120 years for the flagship.
This would also explain why help would not be coming in our lifetime, since we would be lightdecades out of our signal reach, and our expected return would not be for at least a few more decades, if not a century.
