I actually feel like the story being light on detail works in it's favour. Things that we aren't explicitly told, we can imagine ourselves. It honestly strikes a nice balance of detailing the scene and leaving stuff out for us to create our own details.

Yea, I think the general consensus is that there is about 5k left of us, give or take, after the crash and the schizo raids in the months after. The original crew size would be at around 10k, a large majority of which(about 4.5k-ish) would be field team researchers(civillians for the most part when in the void), with rest being either mechanics, farmers, security or in-house researchers.
