Yes, if you want to actually understand what they are saying, then yes - it's definitely more engaging than reading. But people aren't exactly doing that - we have loads of people watching JP chuubas without understanding a lick of Japanese. They literally enjoy streams for funny noises - hey, if that's their entertainment, good for them (that's kinda what I am doing as well), they are bound to pick up on Japanese eventually. That's not what I would call high engagement stuff. I know what kind of people Korone pulled in her streams during early Covid, half of the chat was talking in garbled English, barely understanding anything at all.

In short, funny noise =/= reading a book with images.
