That's why, to refer back to St. Patrick's classic clover analogy, all three individual leaves of the clover "are" the clover, despite not being each other. Hold the clover by one of the leaves, you're holding both that leaf and the clover, but not either of the two individual leaves. Cut that leaf off, you've cut the leaf and you've cut the clover, but you haven't cut either of the two remaining leaves, etc.
