I'd advise you to make some of those baby's first game clone things first like pong or asteroids or a basic shmup. The bits in gamedev that always get your ass are not the complex things like cool weapons and effects but those little details you don't even think about. There's a reason making doors of all things is a sort of infamous gamedev pitfall.
