a lot of people have this assumption that you can just "learn" a language and put it on a shelf so when you'll need it you can use it.
in reality if you don't continually use that language you will gradually lose it.

you say "if you are still gonna keep consuming JP media.." but the truth is that if you learn chinese instead you will have to keep consuming chinese media for years and decades or you will lose it.

that's why it's a bad a idea to learn a language you don't give a fuck about just because "it's useful".

you will spend years studying it practicing it, and then when you get decent you will need to keep consuming media in that language, but since you don't have anything you actually want to consume you will stop using it. and then a few years later you will have lost most of your language skill and eventually virtually all of it.
