Sort of true, but also grossly simplified and over exaggerated. The Common American accent is actually an awkward hodgepodge of Irish, Scottish, English, Spanish and Italian accented English, with which one being the most dominant varying depending on where in America you are. The American accent that most resembled any English accent was the Southern accent, which was the accent of the British Upper Class who largely moved over to start lucrative plantations. The Rest of Britain spoke a wide variety of accents (a lot of Americans don't realise this, but Britain quite literally has a regional accent for every town) but the most widely spoken sounded something more akin to the Stereotypical "Pirate" accent than the British accent.
