It actually does because you have to be able to demonstrate that
A) The person's claims were deliberately attempting to cause harm
B) You suffered harm in the form of income loss or harassment etc as a result
C) The statements are patently untrue and the person knew they were untrue when spreading them
At least that's how it is in the US and EU.

Anyone in the US is free to go on Twitter and tweet "Elon Musk eats babies and sniffs their dirty diapers" and nothing will happen to you besides getting banned off the platform, because it's very hard to prove you knew that statement is untrue. The reason Alex Jones got sued for an insane amount of money and lost is because they were able to prove in court that he knew the Sandy Hook conspiracy theories were 100% fake and he was just peddling lies to make money off their suffering.
